Research Opportunities Within the Advisor Education (LAE) program

1. Getting Started with Research

Research focus

1. Conduct self-reflection.
​2. Understand what happens in an advising session.
  • What advising strategies does an advisor use?
  • How effective is an advisor’s use of summarizing (or other strategy)?
  • How directive is an advisor?
  • How does an advisor help an already autonomous learner?

Research activities

1. Write reflective journals.
2. Conduct peer-advising. Interview each other to find clearer ideas on your current situation.

LAb participation

1. Post reflective journal:
  • Give feedback on other people’s journals.
  • ​Participate in online small group meeting.
2. Show and tell:
  • Share our experience and opinions online.
  • ​Online poster presentation.
  • Photo sharing online.

Research focus

1. Find focus areas: Understanding why something happens and how to control it
  • Investigating learner perceptions of a session (very open)
  • Why does an advisor make certain discourse choices
  • What is an advisor thinking about during a session?
  • How an advisor’s style changes over time

Research activities

1. Review your past work and pick up key words.
2. Analyze current status to find out issues.

3. Conduct peer-advising for research.

4. Research the background of the area that you are interested in (literature review).
